BOOK PRESERVATION INITIATIVE

The Egremont Historical Commission’s current preservation initiative began with their focus on the preservation of several significant volumes in their collection. This was a turning point for the Commission members, who recognized that they could not in good conscience begin to raise funds for the conservation treatment of their rarest books, without first addressing the physical conditions at the Archives Room to which the books would return after treatment.

MT. EVERETT ACADEMY

The 1830 Mount Everett Academy building is a well recognized architectural gem in the heart of South Egremont, Massachusetts. After serving as a private academy for twenty years, the building has demonstrated flexibility as it has been re-purposed many times over the following one hundred and sixty four years. Today the building continues to serve the public as a library and exhibition space.

SOUTH EGREMONT SCHOOL

The South Egremont Village School is one of the last one room schoolhouses in continuous operation in the United States. Built in the heart of the National Register Historic District of the South Egremont Village, this original 1880 single story wood frame structure was built for utility and it has fulfilled its function well. It was a state of the art school room with large windows, maximizing day-lighting, and faced south to gather solar warmth in the winter months.
